The idea behind Maze

Maze was born by chance in 2003 when photographer Kent Johansson was looking for a bedside table for his small Stockholm apartment. He had only a few decimeters to spare between the bed and the wall. In search of the perfect bedside table, the market gave Kent the cold hand, the search was in vain and yielded no results. Instead, he took matters into his own hands. 6 pieces of wood and a handful of nails later, the F-Shelf, and also the beginning of the Maze, was in place. Unknowingly, Kent had as well nailed some of our cornerstones: Smart design combined with locally produced, good material choices.

Since then, a lot has happened. We have created a unique production chain with designers, producers, and business geniuses who all work towards the same goal - to create smart, playful & iconic design that has the smallest possible impact on nature. We have named this production chain and design concept "Slow Production".

If you want to read more about how we work, scroll down, if you want to go into detail, read on here.

How/where/and with whom we produce

Since the start in 2000, we have been working according to our sustainability philosophy Slow Production - which in short means that our goal is to design and produce furniture that will last over time. Most of our production takes place in Sweden (80%) and the rest in Italy and the Baltics (20%).

We have a long-term and sustainable mindset in our entire production chain, from design to production and customer relations. The choice of suppliers and raw materials is made with care and based on a circular and long-term thinking to make as small of a climate footprint as we can. We are proud of our supply chain and our partners in the supply chain, and we share values and a long history of collaboration.

We never overproduce, instead produce smaller series based on demand and provide spare parts when needed. Our warehouse is located  in Norrköping, which means we can deliver quickly and without long lead times between suppliers and warehouses. We never use air freight for our purchases.

By introducing a 20-year warranty on our furniture, we want to contribute to responsible consumption and encourage our customers to invest in furniture that will last for many years.

SUPPLIERS

We choose suppliers with care and create good long-term collaborations where we can work together to constantly find smarter and more resource-efficient solutions that are better for the environment. Several of our suppliers, R-kås, family-owned Backstigs and Steelnova, we have worked with from the start also strive to have as little environmental impact as possible. When choosing suppliers, we always ensure that they comply with the UN's 10 principles for human rights, the environment, labor law and anti-corruption and the ILO's 8 core conventions.

The Material we use

Our products consist of high-quality materials that last over time. The materials we choose and work with comply with Swedish Möbelfakta's environmental requirements, which is confirmed by certificates from all suppliers. This applies to metal, wood, surface treatment, padding, leather, glue and plastic. Read more at www.mobelfakta.se

We have eliminated plastic as much as possible from both packaging materials and products and have a constant ongoing effort to find replacements for the few small parts, such as foot plugs, which remain in a few of our products. We never use PVC.

Metal:

We choose recycled materials, when possible, of the specific product. The metal wire in our products consists of 100% recycled metal in wire up to 8 mm in diameter. The thicker wire and other metal consist of 15–20% recycled metal. If the thicker wire had been 100% recycled, the metal would have been too soft, and the product would not have been as durable and lasted as long.

Color:

We exclusively powder coat our metal products and never manufacture chrome products but choose a powder coat in the color chrome. Powder coating is less environmentally damaging than traditional coating and the coating is completely solvent-free. Unlike other surface treatments, powder coating does not contain heavy metals such as cadmium and lead. In addition, powder coating helps eliminate waste, as the remains are collected and reused.

Wood:

Wood in our products comes exclusively from FSC and/or PEFC certified sustainable forestry and we never use wood from endangered species. Our supplier Larssons Trä, from Tranemo in Sweden, mainly works with birch and pine as raw materials. They work solely with wood that has been grown and processed in Sweden.

Leather:

We buy all leather from Elmo Sweden AB in Svenljunga. It comes from Scandinavian cattle from beef or dairy cows, no animals have been bred solely for the sake of their skin. Elmo has full traceability all the way back to the individual farm for all hides and all farms must follow a strict set of regulations for animal welfare according to the World Organization for Animal Health, among other things.
